An Elle of a treat for our great city |

OH my god you guys, Legally Blonde is fantastic – and it's exactly what Sydney needs right now. This is a musical that is what it is. It's straight up good fun and the smiles in the opening night crowd said it all. Yes it's packed full of all things pink, camp characters and enough sugary lines to give you diabetes, but it never lets the audience down for a moment. Legally Blonde is just the musical to perk up the collective mood of Sydney. It's about time we all had a good time. The musical is not without its serious undertones, though. Lucy Durack as Elle Woods embodies the "don't judge a book by its cover" mantra and plays the role of unlikely feminist hero for all her fast-talking about hemlines, perms and sorority sisters. |
Her comic timing is spot on, especially in the early number Serious opposite Rob Mills, who plays the cad Warner Huntington III frighteningly well. Erika Heynatz deserves a medal or her performance as fitness queen and murder suspect Brooke Wyndham. She not only sang a notable rendition of Whipped Into Shape but did it while skipping. David Harris never faulted as Emmett Forrest. He provided a solid acting presence for some less-experienced performers around him. Helen Dallimore as salon owner Paulette walked a fine line between humour and ham in her big solo number Ireland. Her love interest, Mike Snell, had the audience in the palm of his hands with his his boom-chicka-wow-wow moment as delivery boy Kyle. |
What was surprising was how smart and witty the show was. The lines are quick and sharp and the ensemble number There! Right There! Was an absolute hit. Prepare to have stitches in your stomach and sore cheeks from smiling, because Legally Blonde is one show you can see over and over. MELISSA MATHESON |
